A. Disk Contents
This disk contains the following software components:
EPSON Stylus Photo 700 driver:
Allows you to use the Stylus Photo 700 with your Macintosh computer. After you install the printer software, the driver will appear in the Chooser.
EPSON Monitor3 utility:
Lets you manage print jobs. This utility is available only when background printing is selected in the Chooser.
ColorSync™ 2.0 and Profiles:
Contains ColorSync™ 2.0 system files and profiles for this printer and Apple monitors.
B. System Requirements
The Stylus Photo 700 has built-in serial and parallel interfaces, so you can connect your printer to a Macintosh or a PC. You can even connect both simultaneously; the printer automatically switches between interfaces as it receives print data.
Hardware:
A standard Apple System/Peripheral-8 cable to use with the built-in serial interface.
Macintosh System Software:
System 7.1 (minimum). System 7.5 or later recommended.
Memory requirements:
The printer driver uses the free portion of your computer's system memory as its working memory. The available memory is displayed as the "Largest Unused Block" in the About This Macintosh dialog box (accessed from the Apple menu). The memory requirements for printing a letter size full-page color image are as follows:
6MB of free hard disk space is required to install the driver files. Additional free space is required for printing. The size of the required free space depends on the print job and is about the double of the document file size.
C. Software Installation
If you are using the diskette version of the software, make a backup copy of your diskettes before you install the software. Then follow these steps:
1. Turn on your printer.
2. Hold down the Shift key as you turn on your Macintosh to turn off its system extensions and virus protection programs.
3. Insert your driver diskette into a drive.
4. Double-click the Installer icon. When you see the initial screen, click Continue.
5. The dialog box that appears allows you to install software in one of two ways:
- Easy install. Select this option to install all the software necessary, including the EPSON Stylus Photo 700 driver, EPSON Monitor3 and ColorSync™ 2.0 system files and profiles.
- Custom install. Select only those software components you want to install by clicking on the items.
6. Click Install to copy the selected software to your hard disk.
7. When the installation is complete, click Restart to exit the Installer and restart your Macintosh.
8. Select Chooser from the Apple menu and select one of the EPSON driver icons.
- If you select the Stylus Photo 700 icon, you need to confirm the printer or modem port to which you connected the printer. Make sure the printer is on and the interface cable is connected to one of the ports.
9. If you want to use the EPSON Monitor3 utility, turn on background printing.
10. Close the Chooser. When you see a reminder message to change the printer settings in your applications, click OK.
This completes the installation and selection of the EPSON Stylus Photo 700 driver.
D. Accessing the Printer Driver
The printer driver settings are accessible from two dialog boxes: Print and Page Setup. Most settings are available from both dialog boxes; however, to change the paper size or define a new one, use the Page Setup dialog box. Select Print or Page Setup from the File menu of your application to open these dialog boxes.
IMPORTANT: The driver settings are not saved from one application to the next. However, the settings are saved with each document and are restored if the settings are made from the Page Setup dialog box. Whenever you exit one application and start up a new one, check that the printer settings are still appropriate. For example, if you choose Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper in one application, you will need to re-select it if you exit the application and open a new application.
E. Notes
This section covers compatibility and other issues.
Older versions of drivers:
Stylus COLOR driver version 2.**, 3.** or older can not be used with the Stylus Photo 700 printer. Use version 5.00 (included in this software package) or later.
Enabling high speed serial communication:
Some Macintosh models require the Apple SerialDMA extension to fully utilize the printer's high speed serial data transmission capability. Read the About SerialDMA Ver. 2.0.2 section, or contact Apple Computer, Inc. for more information about SerialDMA Ver. 2.0.2.
Memory requirements:
The printer driver uses the free portion of your computer's system memory as its working memory. If a portion of your image doesn't print, you may not have enough unused system memory on your Macintosh. To correct this problem, close any other applications you are running to free up additional system memory. The available memory is displayed as the "Largest Unused Block" in the About This Macintosh dialog box (accessed from the Apple menu).
Background Printing:
EPSON Monitor3 reserves approximately half the unused memory of the system so that the system can handle other applications while Background Printing is in use. Recommended "Largest Unused Block" is 16 MB or greater, so that at least 8MB of memory can be used for printing. Background Printing can operate with less than 16MB of memory, but printing may be slow. Do not use Background Printing if print speed is too slower.
If the installation of a new application makes it impossible to use Background Printing, this is because some of the Extension files used by Background Printing have been overwritten as previous versions of themselves by the new application 's installer. Re-install the printer driver to solve this problem.
Finest Detail:
This option gives you sharper edges in text, solid graphics, and line art at Fine - 720 dpi, but also increases your Macintosh memory requirements. Finest Detail may also solve any moiré problems if you print an image scanned at 200 dpi or higher resolution. Unless you need extreme precision in your printout or you are printing a high resolution image, you should turn off this option because it may slow down printing.
Be aware that Finest Detail may not sharpen the edges of rotated text. Also, if only a portion of your image prints, you may need to switch Finest Detail off. If some patterns do not print correctly or if you experience memory problems, turn off this feature or increase your computer's memory.
When printing at SuperFine - 1440 dpi, Finest Detail is automatically turned on. This improves print quality but reduces the print speed. If you need high quality and faster print speeds, select Fine - 720 dpi and turn off Finest Detail.
Preview window in Layout dialog:
Preview window, on the left side of the Layout dialog box, may not reproduce the true colors if your display is set to 256 colors. Set it to 32,000 colors or more for best results.
Custom Watermarks:
Custom Watermark allows you to save PICT files as watermarks. If you have QuickTime 2.1 or higher, images in other formats can be used as watermarks because QuickTime automatically converts them to PICT files. An alert will be displayed if QuickTime encounters an unconvertable graphics file.
Virtual memory:
When Virtual memory is on, the driver may take a long time to send print jobs to the spooler. In this case, turn Virtual memory off.
Custom Paper sizes:
The driver provides selectable paper size from 3.94 to 22.00 inches for width and from 3.94 to 44.00 inches for height.
Driver message while printing:
While you are printing, a dialog box containing a message with a number such as "sending data ... (2)" will appear. The number is for maintenance purposes and does not indicate an error status.
Using the driver with PowerBooks:
When using a PowerBook which has only one serial port, select the modem port and make AppleTalk inactive in the Chooser dialog box.
Quadra 900 and 950:
If you have a Macintosh Quadra 900 or 950, you will need to do the following before selecting your printer driver from the Chooser:
1. Open the Control Panel folder in the System folder.
2. Double-click Serial Switch and select "Compatible."
3. Select your printer driver from the Chooser.
AppleShare:
Your Macintosh allows you to connect your printer to your Macintosh's serial port and connect your Macintosh to an AppleTalk network simultaneously. However, depending on the configuration and model of your Macintosh, a problem may occur when printing with the Stylus Photo 700 driver while sending or receiving a file using AppleShare. If this occurs, send your print job after completing the file transmission, or make AppleTalk inactive in the Chooser dialog box.
High Speed Setting:
If High Speed is selected, your printed image may be distorted (it may look as if water was dropped on it). This is typically caused by a misaligned print head. Run the Print Head Alignment utility to correct this. For the best print quality, turn off High Speed.
Installer:
The Installer will not behave normally if a virus protection program is running. Turn off virus protection programs before starting the installation.
Application compatibility:
The following application compatibility problems have been noted:
- Microsoft Excel
When using the Macro "PRINT" command, don't set TRUE for the draft parameter.
- Microsoft PowerPoint
Solid areas of color in your printout may have a speckled appearance. This occurs when a color selected in your application software differs only slightly from one of the printer's primary ink colors. To avoid this problem, select a pure color from your application software. For example, select Format Slide Color Scheme, Change Color, More Colors. Change the Red, Green, and Blue percentages to represent a pure color. For example, pure yellow is: Red = 65535, Green = 65535 Blue = 0. Selecting ColorSync™ 2.0 may also improve the quality of the output.
- Aldus SuperPaint
If a printer error occurs during "Black and White" printing with background printing turned off, your Macintosh does not display an error message. The "Cancel" function is ignored when background printing is turned off.
- Adobe Photoshop 2.0 and earlier
If your monitor is set to 32,000 colors, your document will be printed in black and white. Use other available settings or update your software to version 2.5 or later.
- WordPerfect 3.0
If you choose "Black" as the Ink setting and "No Halftoning" as the Halftoning setting, some graphics may not print. In this case, select "Coarse Dithering" or "Error Diffusion" as the Halftoning setting.
- PixelPaint Pro 2.0
When you print at Fine - 720 dpi or SuperFine - 1440 dpi Print Quality settings, memory errors may occur. In this case, turn on background printing in the Chooser. This problem cannot be solved by increasing the memory size setting for the application.
- Speed Doubler
When Speed Doubler is installed and virtual memory is being used with MicroWeave turned on in the printer driver, printing may take considerably longer.
